Transcription Tools You May Need To Get Started:
You will need one of these, depending on which program/software you decide to use.
The following transcription programs can be used with all transcription jobs, whether the files are sent via email or downloaded to your computer.
1) Dragon Naturally Speaking: This is dictation software that you will need to “type” without actually touching a keyboard. Not every transcriber loves using this program because it’s not the most accurate thing on the planet. But, many people find it very helpful (and necessary) for doing audio or video transcription jobs.
2) Transcriber – This is a cool program that creates a virtual transcript and allows you to use the mouse/trackpad to highlight text and then “type” out what’s highlighted. This is for those who don’t want to use Dragon Naturally Speaking but still need voice-to-text support to transcribe faster.
3) ExpressScribe: This program is an audio player that is used for playback and recording. You can adjust the speed of the playback, which is great if you want to slow it down or speed it up so you can better hear/memorize what’s being said.
4)Foot Pedal: If you’re going to use Dragon Naturally Speaking, a foot pedal is a must! You need it for your computer to trigger the dictation. There are very few transcribers who work well without one of these.
5)Headphones – Although most people don’t use them, you’ll need a good quality pair of headphones to listen to the audio that will be sent to you as an attachment or download.

Keep in mind that people looking to hire you as a remote audio transcriber will probably be using the same job boards.
You may want to create a free account with all of these job sites so that you can easily apply for transcription jobs.
It’s also important to know that most of these companies will ask potential applicants to complete a transcription test, so be sure you’re familiar with the most common abbreviations and medical terms used in audio transcriptions.
Skills and Experience Requirements
Most companies don’t require a minimum amount of experience, and some will only ask that you pass an online test.
Often, it’s just best to apply for everything so you’ll be prepared for any opportunity that comes your way.

1) Transcribe Anywhere: This is a great program because it’s free, and you can use it to do transcription jobs on your own time. You are given audio clips, about 3 minutes each, that are approved for practice purposes. You also can choose different levels of transcription (elementary through advanced).
2) Transcribe-Training: Another great program if you want to learn at your own pace, and the interface is friendly. The audio is in smaller increments, so it’s easier to manage for a beginner.
3) Awesome Transcriptions: This isn’t free, but it was recommended by one of my fellow transcribers who has been doing the job for a long time. They provide all of the equipment that you need and training if necessary.
Also, if you’re doing this for money, it’s imperative to listen back and pick up on the different accents. You can also learn how to edit your work so that clients are happy with it, which will help you grow in this field.

1) Slow Down: The first thing you should learn is how to slow down your speech. When people speak, they usually will not talk at their average speaking pace – so if you can nail this technicality, it will help you feel very comfortable typing fast.
